Pregnancy Ultrasound in Lincoln, AR
Welcome to Smithers Animal Hospital-Lincoln, where we’re there for you from conception to birth. We have ultrasound technology to detect pregnancy and to use in later stages of pregnancy to determine the number of puppies you can expect.
Understanding Pregnancy Ultrasound
After a breeding, you want to know as soon as possible whether puppies are on the way. Ultrasound is a non-invasive way to look inside your dog’s body using sound waves, without surgery and without radiation. It lets our veterinarian see the developing pregnancy in real time and check on the puppies as they grow.
Dogs are typically pregnant for about two months, or roughly 63 days from ovulation. Knowing early whether your female conceived, and later how many puppies to expect, helps you prepare for delivery and lets our team keep a closer eye on mom and her litter throughout the pregnancy.

What to Expect at Your Dog’s Ultrasound
A pregnancy ultrasound is quick, painless and easy on your dog. Here’s how it works:
Timing the First Scan
Pregnancy usually can’t be seen on ultrasound right after breeding. A scan is typically done around three to four weeks after breeding, once the pregnancies are large enough to see. Our veterinarian will recommend the best time based on your breeding dates.
During the Scan
Your dog lies comfortably while a probe is moved gently over her belly. A small patch of fur may be shaved for a clearer picture. The exam is painless, and most dogs relax quickly.
Later in Pregnancy
Ultrasound can be used again in later stages of pregnancy to help determine how many puppies to expect, so you can be ready when it’s time to deliver.
Support Through the Pregnancy
Our staff will help you during the pregnancy to keep the mother healthy and growing at a safe rate with her babies.

Pregnancy Ultrasound: Frequently Asked Questions
How soon after breeding can ultrasound confirm pregnancy?
Pregnancy usually becomes visible on ultrasound around three to four weeks after breeding. Scanning too early can miss a pregnancy that’s still too small to see. Share your breeding dates with our team, and our veterinarian will recommend the best time to schedule your dog’s scan.
Is ultrasound safe for my pregnant dog and her puppies?
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation and doesn’t require surgery, so it’s considered safe for both mom and the developing puppies. The exam is painless, and most dogs lie calmly while it’s done. It can be repeated during pregnancy when our veterinarian needs another look.
Can ultrasound tell me how many puppies to expect?
We use ultrasound in later stages of pregnancy to help determine the number of puppies you can expect. Counts are an estimate rather than a guarantee, since puppies can overlap or be hidden from view, but knowing the approximate litter size helps you and our team prepare for delivery.
How long is a dog’s pregnancy?
Dogs are typically pregnant for about two months, or roughly 63 days from ovulation. The exact timing can vary, which is one reason knowing your breeding dates and keeping our team updated is so helpful. We’ll help you plan the stages of care through the pregnancy and get ready for delivery.
