Surgery in Lincoln, AR

Welcome to Smithers Animal Hospital-Lincoln, where careful, compassionate surgical care helps dogs and cats in Lincoln, Prairie Grove, Farmington, Summers, and everywhere in between get back to feeling like themselves.

Understanding Pet Surgery

Dr. Smithers at Smithers Animal Hospital-Lincoln performs routine surgical services including spays and neuters for canines and felines, exploratory surgeries, biopsies, excisions of abnormal growths, removal of foreign materials causing obstruction in the digestive tract, and removal of bladder and urethral obstructions, to name but a few. We also perform some orthopedic surgeries on an as-needed basis.

Some surgeries are planned well ahead, like a spay or the removal of a lump. Others, like a blocked intestine or a urinary obstruction, need attention quickly. In every case, our doctor will conduct an evaluation to determine if surgery is the best alternative for your pet’s condition and talk through the options with you.

If surgery is deemed necessary, you can rest assured that we will take the utmost care of your pet and treat it as our own, from the pre-surgical assessment through recovery and follow-up.

What to Expect When Your Pet Has Surgery

Knowing what happens on surgery day can make the experience easier for you and your pet. Here’s how we care for every surgical patient:

Pre-Surgical Assessment

Since every pet is unique, we complete an assessment prior to surgery so that we can screen for any abnormalities or conditions that may be problematic. This often includes a physical exam and bloodwork.

An Anesthetic Protocol Built for Your Pet

It’s very common for people to be concerned about their pet undergoing anesthesia, especially when an older pet needs a procedure. To keep your pet safe, we use the information from our evaluations and take into consideration your pet’s species, breed, age, and health to create an anesthetic protocol best suited to your pet.

Monitored Recovery

Once the surgery is complete, your pet will be brought out of anesthesia and our staff will continue to monitor vital signs and pain levels. We keep your pet on site, where our veterinarian can supervise the recovery, until your pet is well enough to go home with you.

Follow-Up Care

All surgeries are followed up with a post-surgical examination and rehabilitation if needed. We’ll send you home with clear instructions and are always glad to answer questions while your pet heals.

Surgery: Frequently Asked Questions

What types of surgery do you perform?

Dr. Smithers performs routine surgeries including spays and neuters for dogs and cats, exploratory surgeries, biopsies, excisions of abnormal growths, removal of foreign materials blocking the digestive tract, and removal of bladder and urethral obstructions. We also perform some orthopedic surgeries on an as-needed basis. Call us to talk about your pet’s specific needs.

Is anesthesia safe for my older pet?

It’s very common to worry about anesthesia, especially for a senior pet. Before surgery, we complete an assessment to screen for abnormalities or conditions that may be problematic. We then create an anesthetic protocol based on your pet’s species, breed, age, and health, and our staff monitors your pet closely throughout.

How should I prepare my pet for surgery?

Our team will give you specific instructions when your surgery is scheduled, including when to stop food and water and what to do about any medications your pet takes. Following these instructions closely helps keep anesthesia as safe as possible. If anything is unclear, please call us before surgery day.

What happens after my pet’s surgery?

After surgery, our staff monitors your pet’s vital signs and pain levels while your pet wakes up. We keep your pet on site, where our veterinarian can supervise the recovery, until your pet is well enough to go home. All surgeries are followed up with a post-surgical examination and rehabilitation if needed.
